GrandMeres Unlimited is dedicated to the proposition that Older Women in the USA are potentially a powerful force for constructive change.

Several years ago, when I was nearing the end of middle age, I visited what was then the Soviet Union. Among other things, I was struck by the forceful presence of Old Women in Russian Society. In fact, it often seemed like the Russian Babushkas were the ones keeping the country going. They could say and do things no one else could get away with. And NO ONE messed with them!

I was inspired. “That’s what I want to be when I grow old!” (Minus the ‘babushka’, of course.)

And so, ever since, I have been encouraging American Grandmothers to act with the courage and strength of the Russian Babushkas. One need not, of course, be a biological grandmother to participate. Any older woman can play the role of grandmothering the children of the USA.

How? By remembering that we can get away with more now than when we were young. And by using this freedom to help fix the country. The idea is to work together in an informal network, with each of us doing what we do best.
